Colt McCoy, the former starting quarterback for the Texas Longhorns who was just drafted by the Cleveland Browns in last week’s NFL draft, took some time to talk about how he stays in shape and maintains a healthy lifestyle. Colt has achieved major accolades including the 2009 Maxwell Award, honoring the nation’s best all around player and the Davey O’Brien Award for the nation’s best quarterback. Colt is an incredible player and he’ll be one of the more sought after quarterbacks in the 2010 NFL Draft. REED: In addition to playing football, do you play any other sports?
McCOY: I played other sports in high school. I played golf, I played basketball, I ran track and I played football.
REED: What do you do to stay in shape during the season?
McCOY: You have all kinds of off-season workouts: lifting weights, conditioning, and I do a lot of outside running, sprints, and agility work.
REED: How does your in season training differ from off season training?
McCOY: It’s a little different. In season you’re more in a maintenance stage of training so you’re doing things to keep body the same way. Lots of rehab week to week because you have different injuries. Off season its a time to get in the weight room to try to bulk up. .Do some heavy lifting and strength training.
REED: What exercise helps you most in your position?
McCOY: For me, I do a lot of band exercises. You know, lots of shoulder exercises, lots of rotator cuff exercises, and you know I think throwing ball is generated from your core so I do a lot of core strengthening workouts.
REED: Do you choose certain foods that help provide you with energy & power up before a game?
McCOY: I eat a lot of fruit. I live a healthy lifestyle. I eat real healthy I don’t eat fried food. I don’t drink. And you know, whatever I put into my body I want it to be able to help me to be the best I can be.
REED: Is there a favorite meal or snack that you have?
McCOY: Well, I grew up from Texas so I’m a steak and potatoes type of guy
REED: How do you stay positive before and during a game?
McCOY: Just Realize how hard you worked and how hard you prepared and go out there and do your best.
REED: What’s your favorite way to chill out and relax?
McCOY: I like to hang out with my teammates and my friends and family. If I were to picture what I do know when I’m relaxing, I would be hanging out with them.
REED: What is the #1 most important tip recommend to kids for staying healthy and getting fit and having fun with a healthy lifestyle?
McCOY: Be active. Don’t spend all your time playing video games or watching tv. Get out side play with your friends and play sports and eat right.
